Farncombe Community Garden

Farncombe Community Garden

The Farncombe Community Garden was conceived by local GPs at Binscombe Medical Centre in 2017, inspired by the idea of social prescribing as a way of improving people’s health and wellbeing, which is now well established and supported by research. It is an ambitious project which aims to bring the local community together in the creation of a vibrant, beautiful, productive and wildlife-friendly garden. It is inclusive to all, seeking to share the health and well-being benefits of the outdoors, connecting people more closely to the natural world on our doorstep and encouraging community cohesion as individuals of all ages and backgrounds work together towards a common goal.

We have worked hard over the past year clearing the site, creating an orchard and growing spaces, creating woodland walks, adding accessible pathways, and planting native hedges and trees.

Our Project

We have planning permission to install a garden building on the site.

This wheelchair accessible building will mean that the users of the community garden will be able to:

  • participate in gardening and craft activities all year round, particularly in winter
  • have a warm, sheltered space, particularly if they are vulnerable
  • rest if needed
  • take refreshments and socialise
  • be signposted to other local services.

Why this project is so important

Since starting the garden project a year ago, over 100 people have got involved and each week our numbers are growing. Our garden is open to all, and we have formed links with local organisations and schools who use the garden for their students and clients. We know that there are vulnerable groups who would like to get involved in the garden, but they need a warm, sheltered space.

In addition, by using the building for fundraising activities, we can become a more sustainable organisation, ensuring that we are around for the community for the long-term.

Funding

We have currently raised £30,000 and are asking Your Fund Surrey for £114,000 in order to realise this project.
